This study used the same blicket detector as in Experiment 1. Twelve wooden blocks of various shapes, colors, and sizes were also used (see Figure 2). A 1.3 cm (diameter) × 2.5 cm (depth) hole was drilled into each block. Eight of the blocks contained a large white map pin inside the hole; the remaining four blocks were empty.

We presented 3-year-olds with backward blocking and recovery from overshadowing contingencies in the blicket detector task, a causal induction task that uses binary, deterministic outcomes. Results revealed recovery from overshadowing but no backward blocking. These results are consistent with recent inferential and computational models of causal learning and induction.

Blicket detector: If you wave a block over the top of the detector, something you wouldn't ever think of to begin with, the detector will actually activate two out of three times. Whereas, if you do the likely thing, put the block on the detector, it will only activate two out of six times. The four year-olds used the evidence to wave the object on top of the detector.

Psychologists have relied on the blicket detector game as a model of how people learn new causal relationships. How does the blicket game work? Typically in an experiment, the researcher tells the participant that there is a box that is a "blicket detector" that will play sounds and light up when a "blicket" is placed on top if it.
